Gísli Konráðsson

I have spent nearly two decades making games: FPS, MMO, strategy and card games, for mobile, VR, AR, PC and consoles.

Along the way I have worked with teams in Europe, the US and Asia.

When I am not building something, I am usually teaching it. Mentoring and passing on what I know is the part of this job I like best.

Ég hef unnið við tölvuleikjagerð í nær tvo áratugi: FPS, MMO, herkænsku- og spilaleiki, fyrir farsíma, VR, AR, PC og leikjatölvur.

Á þeim tíma hef ég unnið með teymum í Evrópu, Bandaríkjunum og Asíu.

Þegar ég er ekki að smíða eitthvað er ég yfirleitt að kenna það. Handleiðsla og að miðla því sem ég kann er sá hluti starfsins sem mér þykir skemmtilegastur.

The Games

Leikirnir

I have been lucky with the games I have worked on. A few of them got a lot of attention and are played by millions. In between those I have worked on plenty of projects with small teams and tight budgets, and I learned at least as much from those.

Some of that work meant solving hard technical problems. Plenty of it did not. I have also spent years on the creative side, from creative direction to visual design, and I would not want to give up either half.

Because of that I am useful at most stages of a project, from the first prototype to the last bug before shipping. If a project is stuck on a technical problem, I can help. If it is stuck on what the game should even be, I can help with that too.

Ef verkefni stendur fast á tæknilegu vandamáli get ég hjálpað. Ef það stendur fast á því hvað leikurinn á eiginlega að vera get ég líka hjálpað.

Sharing Knowledge

Miðlun þekkingar

Teams that keep learning tend to last. The problem is that almost no team ever has the time, and learning is the first thing to go when a deadline gets close. I have watched that happen often enough to think it is worth pushing back on.

Games, film and architecture have been borrowing the same tools for a few years now, and most of the time neither side knows what the other has already figured out. There is a lot of wasted effort in that gap, and it is the part I most enjoy working in.

So I teach, I speak, and I write things down. Usually I learn as much from the questions as the room learns from me.

Public Speaking

Fyrirlestrar

I give talks about my career and whatever I am working on at the time, including the projects that went badly. Those tend to be the useful ones.

The audiences I like best are the ones just starting out. Seeing somebody take their first steps into this industry reminds me why I took mine, and their questions are usually better than the ones I get from people who have been doing it for twenty years.

I talk about the work honestly: what it costs, what goes wrong, and why it is still worth doing.

Making games is hard, so you have to remember to enjoy it.
